INFANT SUFFERING FROM STRANGE SKIN DISEASE

Bekasi, West Java, April 17 (ANTARA) - A 1.5-month infant named Muhamad Ilham in Buaran, Bekasi, is suffering from a strange skin disease curable only through long medical treatment its mother cannot afford.

Ilham's mother, Nurhayati, said her son's body was covered in patches of extra skin layers, his ears were underdeveloped. He also was unable to close his eyes when sleeping.

Nurhayati said Ilham had been in the condition since birth although the delivery happened normally with her third son weighing around two kilograms and a bddy length of 48 centimeters.

"Ilaham was born in normal manner, just like his two elder brothers, but his body was covered in patches of extra skin up to his head with his hair growing underneath the extra skin layer," Nurhayati said.

The child's disease was belived to have been caused by Nurhayati's bad food intake during her pregnancy when she often had to survive on instant noodles because she could not afford other kinds of food.
Nurhayati took Ilham to a doctor for his disease and was given an ointment and told the treatment must be done routinely.

"The doctor said that my son's skin illness was curable with routine treatment, but I could not afford the cost," she said.

Previously, to solve the problem of her son's illness, Nurhayati had applied for the state's health care scheme for the poor but she had to meet too many bureacratic requirements to get her application approved.

Nurhayati now hopes that other parties in the community can help her pay for Ilham's treatment.

Recently, Nurhayati took Ilham to a health clinic for immunization, but the clinic turned her and her son away after telling her to come back Ilham had been cured.
