GOLKAR AIMS TO WIN 50 PCT OF REGIONAL HEAD ELECTIONS
Batam, Indonesia, April 18 (ANTARA) - The Golkar Party has set itself the target of winning 50 percent of 246 regional head elections to be held across the country this year, chief of the party's advisory board Akbar Tanjung said.
"We have set ourselves the target of winning 50 percent of the elections," he said here on Sunday.
The 50 percent victory was not a pessimistic target because it was based on the party's calculation, he said.
He expressed his optimism Golkar would win gubernatorial and district head elections in Riau Islands province this year.
Golkar has picked Aida Zulaikha Nasution, the wife of incumbent governor Ismeth Abdullah, to run for the Riau Islands gubernatorial election. Aida will team up with Eddy Wijaya in the poll.
Akbar said the party had nominated Aida for the Riau Islands governorship because it believed she would be able to continue the progress achieved by her husband.
"As the wife of the Riau islands governor, she knows well what her husband has been struggling for. So she will be able to continue it," he said.
In addition, Aida also was a charismatic figure, evident from the growing support for her re-election in last year's provincial legislative election, he said.
