VLADIVOSTOK, April 20 (Itar-Tass) -- In 2009, Japan imported 5.3
million tons of oil, 4.8 million tons of liquefied natural gas and 745,000
tons of coal from Sakhalin in 2009. Foreign trade turnover between
Sakhalin and Japan in 2009 exceeded 3.3 billion dollars, at January 1,
2010 accumulated Japanese capital in the economy of the region amounted to
6.9 billion dollars, governor of the Sakhalin Region Alexander Khoroshavin
told businessmen in Tokyo. The governor is staying in Tokyo within a
delegation headed by the Russian president's plenipotentiary in the Far
Eastern Federal District Viktor Isahayev.
"In 2009, Japan ranked first according to its share in foreign trade
with the Sakhalin Region," the governor stressed at a meeting with
representatives of Japanese business circles.
Khoroshavin, as his press service reported from Tokyo, invited
Japanese businessmen to more actively participate in implementing major
Sakhalin energy projects, as well as consider a possibility of investing
in the timber, fish processing and building complexes. Today 68 juridical
persons with the participation of Japanese capital, as well as 11 branch
offices and representations of Japanese companies, including a branch
office of the bank Hokkaido Ginko, work in Sakhalin.
"Sakhalin has an experience of many years of mutually advantageous
cooperation with Japan and we intend to expand it," Khoroshavin said in
conclusion.
