RF for coordinating stand on Central Asia water, energy problems.

20/4 Tass 323

MOSCOW, April 20 (Itar-Tass) - Russia is for a coordinated stand on
water and energy problems in Central Asia, says the joint statement the
presidents of Russia and Uzbekistan signed after the talks in the Kremlin.
Dmitry Medvedev and Islam Karimov "discussed topical water and energy
problems of Central Asia and stressed the need to proceed in their
solution from the generally recognized norms of international law, taking
into account the interests of all states of the region, and also declared
for an independent international examination to assess possible negative
consequences of the construction of large hydro power facilities on
trans-border rivers of the region."
"The Russian side regards as a priority achieving a coordinated stand
on water and energy problems of Central Asia, first of all, among the
states of the region and will welcome such arrangements," the statement
says.
In connection with the construction of the Rogun hydro power plant,
Uzbekistan sharply criticizes Tajikistan's plans for the plant's
construction, being concerned that the flow of the Amu-Darya River will
decrease.
