OANA CONTINUES TO OFFSET FLOW OF INFORMATION, SAYS PRESIDENT

Jakarta, April 22 (ANTARA) - The Organization of Asia Pacific News Agencies (OANA) continues to offset the flow of information, OANA President Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf said in his opening speech at the OANA Summit Congress in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday.

The imbalance and the difference of the information flow between the developing and developed countries have not been narrowed by disputes for decades, said the president of the OANA --which now has 44 member news agencies from 33 countries in Asia and the Pacific.

Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf, who is also the president director of Indonesia`s national news agency ANTARA, thus called on all the news agencies members to work together to deal with the problems they are facing including the current crises besetting the media industry.

"The OANA members need to expand content exchanges to include news materials in the forms of video and audio clips, edited TV programs and interactive graphics in order to meet the growing number of subscribers for an ever-greater variety of contents, as well as signing mutual and cooperative agreements that enable the member agencies to share information on new services and ways to make the best use of them," he said.

On the other hand, the OANA and other regional news agency associations need to build a solid cooperation in order to help create positive perceptions on countries in Asia and the Pacific, the Arab region, the Middle East, the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and the Muslim countries, he said.

According to Mukhlis Yusuf, media in the region must convey their own opinions and strive to end the disequilibrium in the global media. "We want to be heard louder. We need to strengthen media cooperation and together deliver our voices to the international arena. The image of the Asia Pacific countries depends on how the world media describe it," he said.

He added that Asia Pacific issues should be reported by the Asia Pacific reporters. "Issues in Korea, for example, should more properly be reported by Yonhap news agency. Issues in Iran should more properly be reported by IRNA or Mehr News Agency. Issues in Indonesia should be reported by Antara News Agency," he said.

Opened by South Korea`s Prime Minister Chung Un Chan, the OANA Summit Congress was attended among others by the President and the Publisher of Yonhap News Agency Park Jung-Chan and the members of the OANA`s Executive Board.

Also on hand at the event are representatives from other regional news agency associations including the Federation of Arab News Agencies (FANA), the European Alliance of Press Agencies (EANA), the Association of Balkan News Agencies (ABNA), the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN) and the International Islamic News Agencies (IINA).

Likewise, Prof. Oliver Boyd-Barret of Bowling Green State University, the USA, and Prof. Nam Jun Kang of Seoul National University, Republic of Korea, were invited to be keynote speakers at the event.
