Writing off debts adds to UAE's initiatives in Iraq
Abu Dhabi, July 7, 2008 (WAM) - Eager to strengthen its fraternal ties with raq, the United Arab Emirates has decided to cancel debts owed by Iraq, amounting to US$ 4 billion, including interests and arrears.
"The decision
by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to write off
debts owed by Iraq shows the country's keenness to strengthen relations with
our brothers in Iraq," Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al
Nahyan said today. He added that the decision coincided with a number of
initiatives taken by the UAE in support of Iraq, including appointment of a
new ambassador to Baghdad.
"This step is set to contribute in bolstering
bonds between the two countries and expanding them to cover all fields of
cooperation."
