GOVT PREPARING 500 THOUSAND HECTARES FOR SMALL-HOLDER'S FOREST
Tanggamus, Lampung April 22 (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan said that the Indonesian government was reserving 500 thousand hectares of land for the development of small-holder`s forests.
"The acreage of small-holders` forests now being cultivated by the locals was only 60 thousand hectares," the minister said here on Thursday.
The government is launching a small-holder`s forest program as one of the efforts to improve the welfare of the local people through environmentally sustainable forest management.
For this purpose, Hasan asked district heads to help locals so that their proposals to develop community forests would reach the ministry of forestry.
"There are still a lot of district heads who have not submitted proposals for the development of such a forest scheme. They should be more active," the minister said.
In the meantime, Tanggamus district regional government has submitted a proposal of 50,000 hectares to be made small-holder`s forest.
"Of the acreage, 14,000 hectares have been realized. My target is that the forestry minister would grant us a license for the management of up to 50,000 hectares of forest," Tanggumus district head Bambang Kurniawan said.
He said that the proposal for the development of the first phase community forest was made in 2008 so that he hoped that the second proposal would be accepted not in a too distant time.
