PYONGYANG, April 22 (Itar-Tass) -- The North Korean government has
decided at its regular meeting to take drastic measures to "increase the
volume of consumer goods with the aim of raising the standards of living
of the population." As the leading party newspaper Rodong Shinmun wrote,
tasks were set to use the country's potential in full to "modernize
enterprises of the light industry which need to launch production of
consumer goods of higher quality."
Speaking a session of the Supreme People's Assembly (parliament)
recently, Prime Minister Kim Young Il said that, "due to the economic
potential, as well as the inexhaustible spiritual strength of the Korean
people," the volume of industrial production in the country in 2009
noticeably increased in comparison with the previous year."
In the current year, as he said, the government again "made an
emphasis on the development of the light industry and agriculture, setting
the task of considerably increasing the volume of production of consumer
goods, as well as grain."
The light industry is under control of North Korean Leader Kim Jong-il.
