S SUMATRA'S COAL PRODUCES US$289.3 MILLION IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE
Palembang, S Sumatra, April 22 (ANTARA) - South Sumatra`s coal last year produced 289.3 million US dollars in foreign exchange from non-oil/gas exports.
Coal has been the second biggest foreign exchange contributor to South Sumatra`s non-oil/gas exports after rubber, head of the South Sumatra industry and trade agency H Eppy Mirza said in Palembang Thursday.
He said that of the total of 40 types South Sumatra`s non-oil/gas export commodities last year, in terms of the total foreign exchange earnings, coal had been the second biggest contributor after rubber reaching 1.111 billion dollars.
But in terms of non-oil/gas export volume in 2009, coal exports had been the largest with 4.3 million tons, followed by rubber 695.8 tons, oil palm and CPO 645.5 tons.
The export volume of pulp reached 372 tons, and the export of the other commodities reached an average of less than 200 tons.
Data of PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA) showed that South Sumatra`s coal reserves reached 22.24 billion tons with an average production of 10 million tons per year.
South Sumatra Governor H Alex Noerdin has said earlier that efforts will be made constantly to boost the coal production to eventually reach 100 million tons per year.
The hope could be achieved in the next few years after the completion of the Tanjung Api-Api seaport and the relevant infrastructure like two-lane railway tracks leading to the port, he said.
He believed that the coal production target could be achieved because the two-lane railway track would enable to boost coal transportation including other non-oil/gas export commodities.
