SKIPPER-LESS TAIWANESE FISHING BOAT FOUND IN INDONESIAN WATERS

Surabaya, E Java, April 22 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy has detained the 10-man crew of a Taiwanese-flagged fishing boat that was found drifting aimlessly north of Madura island without a skipper whom the sailors had allegedly killed in mid-voyage, a spokesman said.

The "MV Sheng I Tsai 165" was on its way to the Pacific Ocean from a Taiwanese port to hunt shark with Lii Roei Long (51) at the helm. But in mid-voyage the all-Indonesian crew attacked and killed him in an argument over working conditions on the boat. Lii`s body was thrown into the ocean, Lt Col Toni Syaiful, spokesman of the Navy`s Eastern Fleet Command, said here Thursday quoting the confession of one of the boat`s crew members.

The skipperless Taiwanese fishing boat was found by the Indonesian Navy`s "KRI Pulau Rengat-711" at the coordinates 06.37 degrees southern latitude and 112.53 degrees eastern longitude, about 13 nautical miles north of Tanjung Modung, Madura, early Thursday morning.

"This afternoon, the Taiwanese boat was towed to the Eastern Fleet quay at Semampir and its 10-man crew detained," Toni Syaiful said.

According to one of the Indonesian crew members, they had killed the boat`s skipper and thrown his body into the sea, Syaiful said.

The crew turned against their skipper because they could no longer stand working conditions on the boat which included lack of food and inhumane treatment.

The 10 Indonesians had been employed by a Taiwanese fishing company through the services of an Indonesian manpower recruitment agency.

Toni said, after the skipper was killed, the boat drifted in the ocean aimlessly as none of the crew knew how to navigate.

About what was to happen further with the boat`s crew, Syaiful said the Eastern Fleet command had coordinated with the police about the legal process they would have to undergo.
