Eight earthquakes occur on Kurils over weekend

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, July 7 (Itar-Tass) - Eight earthquakes took place on the Kuril Islands over the past weekend. According to the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN), the magnitude of the strongest quake reached 6.1 points on the Richter scale. The last two tremors were registered overnight.

The press service of the Far Eastern regional centre of the Emergency Situations Ministry said that the tectonic cataclysms took place in the Pacific Ocean. Epicentres of five earth tremors were located 100-130 kilometres from the uninhabited island Urup, the epicentres of the other quakes were located at a longer distance from the also uninhabited Simushir island. The jolts were not felt in the territory of the Sakhalin region.

Two serious earthquakes were registered in the Sea of Okhotsk near the Kamchatka coast on Saturday. The magnitude of one of them reached 7.2 points. The earth crust movement took place at depths of 600 kilometres. None of the earthquakes has caused the tsunami threat.
