US is not backing idea of broadening G-8 summits
TOYAKO (Japan), July 7 (Itar-Tass) - The United States is not backing the idea of increasing the number of G-8 members by including China in it, Spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council Gordon Johndroe stated on Monday in the Hokkaido city of Toyako, where leaders of the planet's principal countries are now meeting. Commenting on President Nicolas Sarkozy's proposal to increase the number of G-8 members to fourteen, Johndroe said the United States was not in favour of its expansion. This is the first time that the U.S. has expressed its negative attitude to this idea. Japan, which is hosting the current summit, had earlier implied, too, that it was not in favour of increasing the number of permanent summit members. First of all, it objects to the inclusion in them of China, which is its chief regional rival.
At the same time, Washington and Tokyo appreciate the present-daymethod of inviting the leaders of some other countries to the G-8 summits so that they could take part in their individual debates. The leaders of fourteen countries, including China, India, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and several other African nations are taking part in the Toyako summit in this format. France had earlier repeatedly insisted that China, India, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and also one country from the Arab Moslem world should be included in the G-8 to make its discussion of global problems more effective.
As to Russia, President Dmitry Medvedev had outlined its stand on this problem in the interview he held the day before. He implied that the current already expanded format of deliberations on acute problems within the G-8 suited Russia: "The G-8, as an instrument for the consideration of the most complicated problems, is now being broadened and this is good, indeed. Its representative character is increasing. The G-8 is now working not only in the 'eight format'. There is now the 'outreach' format, too, in which five more nations were included. And three more states will be invited to the current summit to take part in the discussion of several key issues. They include South Korea, Indonesia and Australia," Medvedev stated.
"I believe this a reasonable format to discuss various problems," the Russian president noted.
