Russia to take part in European Immunization Week.
MOSCOW, April 24 (Itar-Tass) - Russia plans taking part in the
European Immunization Week /EIW/ due to be held from April 24 through May
1, organized by the World Health Organization.
"EIW aims to help Member States advance plans to ensure universal
immunization by using the power of advocacy and targeted communication to
boost awareness and increase the success of immunization programmes in
reaching individuals who have not been immunized or who did not receive
all needed vaccinations," the WHO's regional office for Europe says at its
official website.
"EIW will emphasize national immunization efforts towards meeting the
regional goal to eliminate measles and rubella by the end of 2010," the
office says.
In the meantime, sources at Russia's Federal Service for Consumer
Rights Protection /Rospotrednadzor/ described the objectives of the
effort as "raising the level of knowledge among the population in what
concerns the infections, the specific protection means, the importance of
protecting oneself against infectious diseases, each child's right to
getting immunization and the benefits it brings."
Spokespeople for Rospotrebnadzor recalled that the introduction of
vaccines has helped to dramatically reduce the indidence of or fully
eliminate a number of contagious diseases that would previously take away
dozens of thousands of human lives a year.
Scheduled immunization for wooping cough, polyomyelitis, catalepsy,
dyphteria, measles, and epidemic parotitis annually saves the lives of
about 3 million people worldwide.
Itar-Tass interlocutors said the Russian medical authorities will
emphasize this year the importance of immunization as a form of preventive
treatment amont the vulnerable sections of the population, including the
ones living in remote areas.
For instance, Rospotrebnadzor and the Russian Red Cross will hold a
special action in the northwest region of Karelia to vaccinate the
remotely living communities for measles and diphteria.
In the Tyumen region, school students will be asked to write
composition on the theme 'Say No
t
o Infections'.
The role-play 'A Trip to Health City' will be held at schools in the
western city of Smolensk. Students will also make reports at special
meetings titled 'What Depends on Myself in My Life'
In most constituent territories of the Russian Federation, the
authorities plan focusing attention on the families where children do not
get the necessary vaccinations.
Like in previous years, nursing and young mothers will be invited to
attend special lectures, classes and consultations at outpatient clinics
and hospitals so as to breed trustworthiness towards vaccines among young
parents.

.Congress of Peoples of Russia to open in Moscow.
MOSCOW, April 24 (Itar-Tass) - Congress of the Peoples of Russia opens
in Moscow Saturday. It will bring together more than 400 delegates from 64
Russian regions.
The main topic of the forum is the 65th anniversary since victory in
World War II.
Spokespeople for the organizing committee of the congress told
Itar-Tass the All-Russia Exhibition Center, one of Moscow City's biggest
display and entertainment compounds has been chosen as the venue of the
forum far from accidentally.
The center, known as the Exhibtion of People's Economy Achievements
during the Soviet era, has for over 70 years been demonstrating the best
achievements scored by peoples living in a multiethnic country.
"This time, too, this exhibition compound plays host to our congress,"
a spokesman told Itar-Tass quite proudly.
Visitors who come to the center these days will be able to join folk
festivals and games in the central alley of the exhibition and a trade
fair.
"Also, the Russian Rainbow festival of traditional cultures and
competitions in national sports will be held as part of the congress's
program.
The delegates to the congress represent the regional agencies of
power, public associations, veteran and youth organizations, scientific
quarters, research communities, and the quarters of arts professionals.
The organizers say these congresses "are real schools of genuine
patriotism, as they help the peoples living in this country to keep up and
safeguard their traditions."
"This time, the forum held under the motto of 'Friendship of Peoples
of Different Ethnic Identities as the Source of Victory' will be a tribute
to the memory of the great achievements of the Russians of older
generations on the frontlines of World War II," the committee official
said.
