Belarus to elect local legislatures on Sunday.

MINSK, April 25 (Itar-Tass) -- Some seven million Belarusian voters
will elect members of local legislatures on Sunday.
More than 25,000 contenders will compete for 21,300 seats in local
parliaments. The toughest competition will be for seats in the Minsk City
Council - four contenders per one seat. In the majority of rural areas,
however, the elections will be non-alternative.
The Belarusian law allows not only the country's subjects but also
Russians permanently residing in Belarus to take part in the elections. A
total of 26 Russian citizens out of 60,000 living in the republic have
been registered as candidates.
Early voting has been held since April 20, and, according to Belarus'
Central Election Commission, 22 percent of voters had already cast their
ballots as of Saturday morning.
The elections' preliminary results are expected to be announce on
Monday.
