Tajik president hopes situation in Kyrgyzstan will normalize soon.
DUSHANBE, April 25 (Itar-Tass) -- President Emomali Rakhmon of
Tajikistan said on Saturday developments in the neighbouring republic of
Kyrgyzstan were its "internal affair." He also expressed the hope the
situation in the "friendly republic will soon normalize."
"In these days when, due to certain reasons, the world community is
closely watching the developments in Central Asia, I would like to stress
once again that the developments in the neighbouring country, though an
internal affair of Kyrgyzstan, cannot but be of serious concern," Rakhmon
said in his annual message to the national parliament. "Our people have
gone through similar trials (the civil war of 1992-1997) and we know the
price of it only too well. That is why we hope the Kyrgyz people will be
able to normalize the situation in their country and ensure its normal
development."
According to the Tajik leader, these developments "will by no means
tell on the good-neighbourly cooperation between the two countries."
Touching on the general situation in Central Asia, Rakhmon noted that
the region "is at the crossroads of clashing interests, so we have to
pursue a balanced and reasonable policy." In his words, Central Asia, "a
vulnerable and fragile spot on our planet, should not be an arena for
instability and confrontation of interests."
