C KALIMANTAN PROPOSED TO BECOME GREEN PROVINCE

Palangkaraya, C Kalimantan, Indonesia, April 25 (ANTARA) - Many parties have proposed that Central Kalimantan be declared a green province, meaning that all regional government policies must be environment-oriented, Governor Agustin Teras Narang said.

"In principle, we are very pleased to become a green province," he said here on Sunday.

Narang said the proposal surfaced at a recent working meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and governors from all over the country in Bali.
The proposal was a clear response to the province's green government policy (GGP) which was considered successful, he said.

The GGP covered a number of environment-oriented activities such as a joint movement to make use of idle land (Geber MLT), he said.

Once Central Kalimantan was declared a green province, all its regional policies must be environmentally friendly, he said.

Likewise all business undertakings operating in the province must abide by environmental principles, he said.

"Each of business permits to be issued must be based on the results of environmental impact analysis (Amdal), meaning that if a forestry company cuts down trees it must plant another trees and if a mining company digs land for mining purpose it must reclaim the former mining site," he said.

Yet a lack of transparency on the part of district governments in the discussion of Amdal documents might pose an obstacle to the policy, he said.
