Medvedev highly assesses results of G-8 summit

TOYAKO (Japan), July 10 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has highly assessed the results of the G-8 summit on Hokkaido.

Addressing here a press conference, devoted to its results, he stressed that "the summit's agenda was quite comprehensive and many pressing problems were discussed, which are not only important for the states concerned, but alsofor very many people on this planet".

The president noted in his opening speech to the press conference that "the discussions were primarily focussed on the current state of worldeconomy, where the skyrocketing cost of foods is particularly disturbing".

"The leaders of the G-8 nations were unanimous here that composite measures are needed to consolidate the global food security. The point is to render urgent food aid, to draw up a package of long-term anti-crisismeasures".

Medvedev stressed in this connection that Russia's "long-term contribution to the solution of this problem will primarily consist of steps to substantially increase the output of farm products and their delivery not only within the country, but also to the world markets". In principle, "universal shortage of foodstuffs is not the main problemtoday", he noted.

The summit has approved the Russian initiatives to hold meetings of agriculture ministers and to subsequently arrange a so-called "grainsummit", he stated.

"Close attention was devoted to global energy security in conditions when the cost of energy carriers is growing rapidly," the Russian leader stated, adding that the situation on the markets of raw materials "remainscomplicated".

He pointed in this connection to the importance of taking due account of "interdependence between energy producers, energy consumers, and the state transistors". National reports were submitted to the summit on the implementation of these principles and we presume that additional measures could be elaborated on their basis to further promote cooperation in thefield of energy," he noted.

In Russia "the problem of energy is to a large extent linked with energy effectiveness," Medvedev noted. "We possess huge reserves of mineral energy sources. Nevertheless, we have to see to the energy effectiveness of our economy. In the long run, this will help us solve the global task, linked with climate change and with the need to lessen the amount of hothouse gases ejected into the atmosphere." "Steps to counter climate change was another subject of our deliberations," Medvedev noted. In his opinion, "it was a very fruitful discussion". The states have realised by now the dangerous nature of the ongoing processes and are beginning to go over from general talk about the need to take care of the climate to the elaboration of quite concretedecisions," he said.

It is now a tradition to add Africa problems to the principal items on the agendas of G-8 summits, Medvedev said, adding, "We are backing the world community's increasingly active efforts to assist the economic development of Africa." "Russia is prepared to boost its contribution to this cause and to increase its aid to the African nations". For instance, it is ready to help strengthen the peace-making potential, the president noted, to takepart in the development of the public health and education systems there.

"The more so since the two latter tasks are in keeping with our ownnational priorities," he stressed.

"Inadequacy of the existing international institutions with respect to the current realities, with the presently existing negative processes, was one more subject of our deliberations. And our common task is to furnish aconsolidated answer to these challenges," Medvedev stated.

"Steps to counter international terrorism are still rank among the most pressing tasks. The stand of our countries remains immutable. It is reflected in our joint statement. Moreover, it stresses again the central role of the United Nations in the fight against this evil and indicatesthe G-8 new steps in the anti-terror effort".

Medvedev thanked the Japanese colleagues "for the excellent organisation of the meeting, for the preparation and very successful holding of the summit. "In my opinion, this has in large measure contributed to the resultativeness of the summit and to the outcome of the negotiations, which were held here, on Hokkaido," the Russian presidentstated.
