Former chief of Kyrgyz presidential staff arrested.
30/4 Tass 191
BISHKEK, April 30 (Itar-Tass) -- The former chief of the Kyrgyz
presidential staff, Kanybek Zhoroyev, was arrested in Kyrgyzstan, a source
in the Kyrgyz law enforcement agencies told Itar-Tass on Friday.
"Zhoroyev was summoned for interrogation, but it was decided to keep
him in custody for a month," the source said. "Zhoroyev was charged with
office abuse and was brought in a detention centre of the Kyrgyz National
Security Service," the source noted.
Zhoroyev was summoned for interrogation under the investigation of the
April 7 riots on the Bishkek central square. Some 85 people were killed
and about 1,500 people sought medical advice due to clashes between the
oppositionists and the law enforcers. The former Kyrgyz President
Kurmanbek Bakiyev had to flee the country, and the opposition government
came to power.
Several former high-ranking officials have been detained so far. They
are suspected of the April 7 massacre in Bishkek. The former Kyrgyz
Defence Minister Baktybek Kalyev and former Deputy Security Service Chief
Daniyar Dunganov are among them. The massacre charges were also brought in
absentia against the former Prime Minister Daniyar Usenov, the brother of
the former president and the former chief of the State Guard Service
Zhanybek Bakiyev, the former chief of the Kyrgyz National Security Service
Murat Sutalinov and the elder son of the former president Marat Bakiyev,
who worked in the Kyrgyz National Security Service.
