Soviet troops take control of Reich`s Interior Min - 65 years ago.

NEW YORK, May 2 (Itar-Tass) - On this day 65 years ago, Soviet troops
took control of the Third Reich's Interior Ministry that was presided over
by one of the main Nazi criminals - Heinrich Himmler.
Russian troops are besieging the Fuhrer's underground fortress in
Tiergarten, the Associated Press said in a dispatch from Berlin.
It also said the Soviet troops were located in the area of the
Brandenburg Gate - Berlin's Arch of Triumph - and their forces took
positions along the bank of the River Spree in front of the city's
metropolitan cathedral.
The AP quoted Joseph Stalin's statement suggesting that Soviet troops
had gained control over 200 sections of the German capital.
The correspondents provided statistics on the continuing surrender of
Wehrmacht's servicemen, saying more than 9,000 soldiers and officers had
surrendered in the previous day.
U.S. media said more than a million Nazi servicemen had been killed on
the Eastern front during the last four months of combat operations and
another 800,000 had been taken prisoner.
They said Germany had lost 6,000 planes, 12,000 tanks and 23,000
artillery weapons at the same time.
