Duma views G8 important to developing multilateral dialogues

MOSCOW, July 10 (Itar-Tass) -- The State Duma holds that the summit of the Group of Eight is "a very important stage in the development of the multilateral dialogues of the leading powers of the world," Konstantin Kosachev, the chairman of the State Suma International Relations Committee, said on Wednesday, commenting on the summit of the Group of Eight that closed on Japan's Hokkaido Island.

He said the number of arrangements reached during the Toyako summit had surpassed the number of those reached at the previous, Heiligendamm summit - 23 arrangements were reached then and 30 now. "All the arrangements are very specific, suggesting work of executive andlegislative authorities in all the G8 countries," the MP holds.

Kosachev emphasised the Russian president's initiatives for a grain union, for a meeting of agriculture ministers of the G8 countries, and on matters of energy security - they amount to Russia's highly weighty and important contribution to the work of the Group of Eight." Kosachev also expects that as a result of the G8 summit, the suggestions of Russia's ill wishers to exclude it from the Group of Eightwill be dismissed.

He stressed that at the Toyako summit Russia affirmed its absolutely justified right to participate in all dimensions of the G8 activities. "I believe the G8 wail continues developing qualitatively and quantitatively to including others world centres: China, India, South Africa, Brazil andMexico." "The format of G8 will become ever more representative," the MP said.
