Condoleezza Rice says Russia's policy in Abkhazia is not useful

WASHINGTON, July 10 (Itar-Tass) - The U.S. Secretary of StateCondoleezza Rice believes that Russia's policy in Abkhazia is not useful.

Rice arrived in Georgia on Wednesday to meet Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, the leaders of Georgian opposition parties and theGeorgian parliament's ex-speaker Nino Burdzhanadze.

The U.S. secretary of state noted that she had come to visit herfriend referring to President Saakashvili. She also voiced the U.S.

support for Georgia's territorial integrity.

At the same time, a high-ranking American official who is being quoted by the U.S. media on condition of anonymity said that Russia should respect the territorial integrity of neighbouring countries and understandthat the imperial times have gone.

Tension has recently risen in Georgia's breakaway province of Abkhazia. A series of blasts has shaken the unrecognised republic. The U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for an immediateinvestigation into the blasts that claimed the lives of civilians and U.N.

employees.

Ban Ki-moon noted that the blasts had occurred against the background of mounting tension in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict. He called on all the parties involved to show restraint, refrain from violence and look fora peaceful and durable joint settlement.
