Peace treaty to be 1st step towards security in Korea - paper.

6/5 Tass 250

PYONGYANG, May 6 (Itar-Tass) - The signing of a peace treaty instead
of the current armistice agreement may become the first step towards
ensuring lasting security of the Korean peninsula, the Korea Today
magazine wrote in its latest issue.
Progress and denuclearization of the Korean peninsula directly depend
on that issue, a magazine article said. It reminded the readers that over
the past six years the nuclear problem of that region has been discussed
practically with no result at six-party talks and through other channels,
and the main reason is a wrong approach to the settlement of that peace
issue.
The Korea Today said on January 18, 2010 a representative of the North
Korean Foreign Ministry came out with an offer to sign a peace agreement
that would create an atmosphere of mutual trust between North Korea and
the USA and speed up the denuclearization process.
If Washington really intends to peacefully co-exist with North Korea
and seeks to achieve peace on the Korean peninsula, the American
administration can have no reasons against the signing a peace agreement,
the article said.
If this major issue is not settled, no other temporary agreements
could prevent failures in the future, the magazine warns. The signing of a
peace agreement is not a bargain, when one of the sides makes concessions
as a favor, but is a political issue the settlement of which meets the
interests of both North Korea and the United States, the magazine stressed.
