Nearly 90% of survey respondents say want young to read newspapers

TOKYO, July 11 Kyodo - Eighty-nine percent of Japanese surveyed said they want their children and grandchildren to develop a habit of reading newspapers, according to results of the private-sector survey released Thursday.

The survey also found that 94.0 percent of minors, or people aged 19 or younger, believe that people should have such a habit when they become an adult, according to Hakuhodo DY Media Partners Inc., an arm of advertisingagency Hakuhodo DY Holdings Inc.

Hakuhodo DY Media said the results of the poll, conducted in January and February, show that newspapers have ''universal'' elements that capturegenerations of people.

Asked what medium is the most convincing for the purpose of mass communications, 73.3 percent said newspapers, while 37.3 percent said TVbroadcasting and 20.7 percent the Internet.

Asked to specify the medium they want to spend more time on, 40.6 percent, orthe highest percentage of respondents, said newspapers.

Newspapers also received the highest marks when people were asked to identify mass media which they believe can provide them with reliable information about world events, or to identify mass media they believe provide the most accurateanalysis of news events.

The survey covered people aged 15 to 69 living in the Tokyo metropolitan areaand the Kansai area centered on Osaka, with 1,050 valid responses received.
