Japan firms to co-develop tech for next-generation large TV panel

TOKYO, July 11 Kyodo - Sony Corp. and 10 other Japanese electronics and materials makers, backed by the industry ministry, will jointly develop a technology to mass-produce largeorganic electroluminescence panels for use in next-generation flat televisions, a ministry affiliate said Thursday.

The public-private sector initiative is intended to boost Japanese companies' competitiveness in the market for OEL panels as they are facing intensifying competition from overseas companies, including South Korea's SamsungElectronics Co.

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said the project will start later this year and the 11 companies involved will aim to develop the technology by 2012to churn out 40-inch or larger OEL panels.

The industry ministry will help finance the project, requiring huge investments, with NEDO providing some 700 million yen for the fiscal yearending in March 2009, according to the organization.

The 11 companies include Sharp Corp., Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., a joint venture between Toshiba Corp. and Matsushita Electric IndustrialCo., and Sumitomo Chemical Co., in addition to Sony.

Compared with liquid crystal displays, OEL panels are thinner and consume less electricity. Sony released the world's first OEL panel TV last December with an11-inch screen.
