PAY ATTENTION TO DIGITAL MEDIA - FORMER PM
PUTRAJAYA, May 12 (Bernama) -- Former deputy prime minister Musa Hitam
has called on the government to pay attention to the rise of digital media,
describing it as an important development in the country.
Musa said digital media provided avenues for people to express their views,
which he said was imperative for democracy and something which was lacking in
the past as traditional media tended to be more compliant, making themselves "a
government devotees."
"I am a democrat," Musa said, "I believe in criticism, I believe in people
expressing their views, however damaging it is, however critical, however
serious they criticise, I will accept it."
To make a democratic system worked, he said, "We have to have this openness
to criticism."
Speaking to reporters after delivering a keynote address at the Third
Plenary Conference of Tracking Development here, Musa said digital media also
provided competition to the mainstream media.
"They (mainstream media) ought to be more open now as the competition is
getting very serious."
