.Russia's deputy FM and EU SR for Central Asia discuss Kyrgyzstan.
12/5 Tass 161
MOSCOW, May 12 (Itar-Tass) -- The situation in Kyrgyzstan was
discussed by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin and the EU
Special Representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel on Wednesday.
"The sides have exchanged views on the situation in Central Asia," a
Russian Foreign Ministry source said. "The two men put the emphasis on the
situation in Kyrgyzstan, as the republic plans to make changes to the
Constitution and organise a referendum on these changes."
In early May, Mr. Morel made a second trip to Bishkek, where he said
that the European Union paid much attention to the state of Kyrgyzstan's
social and political life, and that the EU supported "further
democratisation of the republic." He welcomed the intention of Kyrgyzstan'
s leaders to establish a parliamentary republic in the country.
Kyrgyzstan's interim government has formed the Central Election
Commission for future elections and the referendum. The country's
Constitutional Conference started working on May 4 with the aim to
formulate changes to the present Constitution. The referendum on the
amendments to the Constitution is expected to be held on June 27. If the
proposed changes are supported by the nation, the country's president will
give way most of his powers to the parliament.
Kyrgyzstan will have both parliamentary and presidential elections on
October 10.
