300 Nepalese stranded in Baghdad

Kathmandu, Jul 11 (PTI) Nearly 300 Nepalese labourers, including Gorkhas, who were taken to Baghdad by different manpower agencies promising lucrative jobs, have been strandedfor the past one week.

About 150 Nepalese who reached the war-torn country were promised job in Yarthau hotel of Baghdad while the rest 135 were supposed to work with a local Global SecurityCompany, according to officials.

Most of them who were stranded hail from westernNepal, according to the National News Agency (R.S.S.).

Harka Bahadur Thapa, who cried over telephone while informing about their plight, said their condition was verymiserable.

The U.S. security personnel have provided them justtwo loaves of bread once in a day, he alleged.

Heavily armed Baghdad police have been surrounding thehotel in which they are putting up.

The man power agency which took them there left themwithout proper documents. Each of them have paid at least Rs.

300,000 to the agencies for the job they were promised.

The hotel owner has refused to provide them job anddemanded USD 40,000 in advance before recruiting them.

Nepalese are not permitted to go to Iraq for the purpose of employment. Three years ago 12 Nepalese labourers who reached in search of job were killed by extremists. PTI
