VLADIVOSTOK, May 14 (Itar-Tass) -- A group of 61 Japanese elderly
people will arrive visa-free on Friday on the South Kuril Island of
Kunashir, which Tokyo claims from Russia together with three other islands of the range.
The first delegation from Hokkaido this year will stay on the island
for three days. Some of its members are 70-75 years old and were born on
the Kuril Islands, which Russia gained after the Second World War. They
will render tribute to their ancestors who lived on Kunashir and were
buried there.

.NKorean party mouthpiece calls on US to sign peace treaty.
PYONGYANG, May 14 (Itar-Tass) -- North Korea's Communist Party
mouthpiece Nodon Sinmun newspaper again called on the United States on
Friday to "urgently sign a peace treaty instead of current armistice
agreement."
The daily said "a peacekeeping regime" is necessary to decrease
tensions on the Korean Peninsula, put an end to confrontation and free the
region of the danger of war in the interests of the whole Korean nation
that wants peace and stability."
The newspaper said U.S. sanctions failed to exert any influence on the
country. "Therefore, the U.S. administration should reject empty talk
about peace and security and immediately sign a peace treaty that would
formally end the Korean war of 1950-53," the publication said.
Nodon Sinmun first called for a peace treaty with the United States in
early May, but days later claimed North Korea has succeeded in producing a
nuclear fusion device.
Next day North Korea received a warning from Chinese media to stop
playing nuclear games.
"It must be borne in mind by North Korea that it is playing a
dangerous game with Northeast Asian powers while relying on its
considerably weak national strength," the Global Times said.
The South Korean Yonhap news agency said it was a rare move for
Chinese state-controlled media to criticize Pyongyang and recalled that
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il pledged to create "favorable conditions"
for the resumption of six-party talks at his meeting with Chinese
President Hu Jintao last week in Beijing.
