Russo-Kazakh protocol on military exercises to be shortly signed

GVARDEISKY SETTLEMENT (Kazakhstan), July 11 (Itar-Tass) - Russia and Kazakhstan will shortly sign a 3-year protocol on joint exercises of the armed forces of the two countries, Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov told reporters here on Friday.

"I believe we shall sign this 3-year protocol on joint military exercises within the next few weeks, smoothing out the different aspects of interaction among practically all the arms of the two services," he stated during his visit to the proving ground of the Training Centre ofthe Ground Forces of Kazakhstan.

Serdyukov and his Kazakh counterpart Danial Akhmetov were shown there the combat capabilities of the weapons and other hardware with which theKazakh ground forces, missile units and artillery are now armed.

"First of all, I wish to thank my colleague Danial Akhmetov for the cordial welcome accorded to our delegation. It took us quite a time to arrange the current manoeuvres, to ensure such effective interaction. I regard this as a serious step ahead in the promotion of cooperationbetween our armed forces," the Russian minister stated.

The two thousand-strong Russo-Kazakh airborne unit, specially formed for the tactical "Joint Action-2008" exercise, will launch on Friday amock assault to encircle and wipe out some illegal armed formations.

Press Secretary of the Russian Defence Minister Alexei Kuznetsov stated in turn that the bilateral 2008 plan of cooperation between the military establishments of the two countries stipulated differentexercises to polish off operative and combat methods.

He said that the biggest one would be the September staff exercise, which is to be held on the territory of the Volga-Urals Military District of Russia. Taking part in it will be a motorised infantry battalion of theground forces of the Kazakh army.

Kuznetsov recalled that the final active phase of the Russo-Kazakh "Joint Action-2008" exercise, including parachute landings of airbornetroops and live-fire drills, would begin on Friday.

"Several similar Russo-Kazakh military exercises were held before this, for instance, the "Southern Shield-2002", the "Frontier-2004", and the "Frontier-2005"," Kuznetsov recalled, adding that taking part in them usually were more than 1,500 servicemen of the Russian airborne troops andof the Kazakh aeromobile forces, as well as some Kazakh air force units.

Present at the proving ground, where the combat capabilities of the weapons and other hardware of the Kazakh Armed Forces were demonstrated, were Defence Minister of Tajikistan Sherali Khairulloyev, Defence Minister of Kyrgyzstan Bakytbek Kaluev, and Deputy Defence Minister of UzbekistanRustam Niyazov.
