BISHKEK, May 17 (Itar-Tass) - A meeting in memory of the victims of
April 7 clashes in Kyrgyzstan is held in the central square of capital
Bishkek 40 days after the events, in which 87 people were killed.
Several thousand demonstrators flocked to the square on April 7 to
demand the resignation of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. Some of them were
armed with weapons seized from law enforcement officers in a clash in the
eastern part of the city. Special forces and also snipers opened fire. As
a result of clashes, the opposition managed to seize by the evening the
main administrative building of the country. Bakiyev and his allies hid in
the south of the country, and then fled Kyrgyzstan. Eighty-seven people
were killed and about 1,500 sought medical aid during the conflict. An
interim opposition government came to power.
Tass reports from the site that the meeting takes place in front of
the office of the Social Democratic Party, where first clashes between
police and law enforcement officers on the one side and the opposition on
the other side began on April 7.
According to different sources, up to 4,000 people take part in the
action. The prime minister of the interim government, Roza Otunbayeva, and
some of her deputies are also at the site of the meeting. People can watch
on a big screen installed near the party office video footage of the
tragic events. "We have come to power in order to lay the groundwork for
building a democratic state in Kyrgyzstan," Otunbayeva said at the
meeting. "And we shall do everything possible to avoid tragic events in
the future," she stressed.
Some government officials come out in favour of building a monument to
the victims of the shooting of civilians in the central square of Bishkek.
