RF, Kazakhstan hold active stage of military drill in Kazakhstan

GVARDEISKY SETTLEMENT (Kazakhstan), July 11 (Itar-Tass) - Russia and Kazakhstan held an active stage of the joint military exercise codenamed "Cooperation-2008" in southern Kazakhstan under the command of the defence ministers Anatoly Serdyukov and Danial Akhmetov.

About 2,500 servicemen and 240 pieces of military hardwareparticipated in the war games.

Kazakh Defence Minister Danial Akhmetov noted it was important forKazakhstan to train the joint actions. "The leaders of our countries have reiterated the goal of the exercise as the readiness for small-scale conflicts and the struggle with international criminal groups. These exercises should be regular," he pointed out.

For his part, Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said the countries have prepared for these war games for a long time, "Therefore, I believe that it is a serious step in the cooperation between our armed forces."For the past few years it is the first joint military exercise with a live fire drill in difficult climate conditions. During the war games Kazakhstan practiced the live fire from upgraded military hardware: a multiple artillery rocket system "Naiza", a self-propelled howitzer "Semser", a mortar launcher "Aibat" and an artillery system "Nona". About 200 paratroopers from the Ulyanovsk 31st air assault brigade of the Russian Airborne Troops participated in a landing mission during the war games.
