One of OIC priorities is to ensure decent life for every Muslim.
DUSHANBE, May 18 (Itar-Tass) -- Tajikistan's president is for
enhancing the role and importance of the Organization of the Islamic
Conference (OIC) on the international arena. Emomali Rakhmon expressed
this view on Tuesday, delivering greetings to participants in the 37th
meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers that opened in Dushanbe.
Taking part in the meeting are delegations of 57 Islamic countries and
representatives of observer countries, including Russia.
Among the OIC priorities the Tajik president mentioned ensuring decent
life for every Muslim. Giving examples of specific actions of the OIC the
Tajik leader pointed to the establishment of the Islamic Assistance
Foundation and of a special department for humanitarian aid in emergencies.
"Humanity must rally, being faced with the world financial and
economic crisis and new global challenges and threats, and the OIC can
play a substantive role in this," Rakhmon said.
Regarding problems of Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan, the president
said that the Organization of the Islamic Conference can give active
assistance to their solution. He stressed that "Tajikistan's stand on the
matter remains constant - Afghanistan's problems cannot be resolved by
military methods."
Rakhmon's remarks were followed by a debate on the role of Islamic
states in the world today, the need of economic integration of OIC member
countries and the importance of pooling the efforts in the fight against
terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and other challenges of the
present. The debates are held in camera. The OIC meeting will last for two
days.
