US welcomes India's decision to approach IAEA

New Delhi, July 11 (PTI) The U.S. Friday welcomed India's decision to approach I.A.E.A. for approval of the Safeguards Agreement and promised to work with the U.N. atomic watchdog as well as the Nuclear Suppliers Group (N.S.G.) to ensure the nuclear deal is implemented "as quickly as possible".

U.S. Ambassador to India David Mulford said "much work" still needs to be done to see the "historic initiative" of Indo-U.S. nuclear deal through the final stages.

"The U.S. welcomes the government of India's decision to move forward with the U.S.-India civil nuclear initiative by seeking International Atomic Energy Agency's approval for its safeguards agreement," Mulford said in a statement.

He said the initiative is a significant component of the strategic partnership envisioned by U.S. President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

India on Wednesday asked the I.A.E.A. to circulate the draft safeguards agreement among its Board of Governors so that it could be ratified by the Board.

This crucial step in the implementation of the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal was stuck because of stiff opposition by Left parties, which withdrew their outside support to the government over the issue.

"We will work closely with India, with Governors of the I.A.E.A., with our N.S.G. partners and the U.S. Congress to ensure that this initiative is implemented as quickly as possible," the Ambassador said.
