Azerbaijan can serve as example of tolerance - Aliyev
BAKU, July 13 (Itar-Tass) - Azerbaijan can serve as a good example of peaceful coexistence of different cultures and religions and of an interethnic dialogue, President Ilkham Aliyev said at the inauguration of the reconstructed Bibi-Heybat Mosque on Saturday.
"Representatives of all religions feel themselves calmly andcomfortably in Azerbaijan," he said.
"Our experience will be studied all over the world. In the future the role of Azerbaijan, as a space of tolerance, in building up andstrengthening an interethnic and intercultural dialogue in the world will grow," he said.
The president stressed that his country respects all religions. The government pays much attention to the construction and reconstruction of all holy places, not only mosques. There are five Orthodox churches and a synagogue in Azerbaijan. Several months ago a Catholic church opened there.
"I want all citizens of Azerbaijan irrespective of their nationality and confession to feel themselves good in this country," he said.
The head of state admitted that Azerbaijan's growing economic potential would contribute to the improvement of living conditions ofcitizens.
Bibi-Heybat on Baku's southern outskirts is Azerbaijan's biggest mosque. It was built back in the seventh century, but was destroyed in 1934 at the instructions of the Soviet government. The reconstruction work began in 1997.
