Abu Dhabi's foreign trade grows 28.4pc in H1 2008
Abu Dhabi, July 16, 2008 (WAM) - Abu Dhabi 's foreign trade grew 28.4 per cent to Dh46.641 billion in the first half of the year, against Dh36.336 billion in the corresponding period, as emirates emerges as an alternative trading hub in the region. According to latest figures tabulated by Abu Dhabi Customs, imports during the first half of 2008 reached Dh40.145 billion compared to Dh30 billion, in the same period in 2007, an increase of 31 per cent. The three nations led by Saudi Arabia, Japan and USA were top exporters to Abu Dhabi.
Non-oil Exports of Abu Dhabi also showed an encouraging growth signs, as figure swelled to Dh3.341 billion in half-year 2008 up against Dh2.761 billion, in the first half of 2007, a significant rise of 23 per cent. The trend reflects outcome of Abu Dhabi's drive to develop its non-hydrocarbon economy, reducing its dependence on depletable natural resources. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and China were the top three destinations for Abu Dhabi's non-oil exports.
Re-export activities grew to Dh3.154 billion from Dh2.938 billion in the first half of 2007. The top re-exports destinations were Qatar, Oman and India.
The Abu Dhabi Customs said 58 per cent of imports were conducted through sea ports while 30 per cent merchandise passed land borders and 12 per cent were through air freight. Saeed Ahmed Al Muhairi, Deputy Director of the Abu Dhabi Customs said the data underscored the business-friendly attitude and international best practices followed by the department.
