Russia, Italy FMs to discuss prospects for bilateral relations

MOSCOW, July 16 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs
Sergei Lavrov meets his Italian counterpart Franco Frattini here on
Wednesday to discuss prospects for the development of bilateral relations with due regard for interaction in Europe.
The Italian Foreign Minister is accompanying President Giorgio
Napolitano who arrived in Russia on Tuesday for a three-day State visit. During the upcoming talks in Moscow the sides are planning to discuss the most important matters concerning both bilateral relations and the international situation as a whole.
In 2007, bilateral trade turnover, which grows with every passing
year, ran at $35,000 million. The Italian side particularly emphasizes the importance of joint projects, which are being implemented by the Italian energy companies ENEL, and ENI and the Russian Gazprom, participation in the South Stream project, in particular.
Contacts at the local level, between individual regions of the two
countries, including those in the sphere of cultural exchanges, actively develop between Russia and Italy along with continuous mutually beneficial high-level ones.
The Italian President's press service on Tuesday circulated a
communiquй pointing out that the visit to Russia at such a high level
emphasizes the mutual desire to develop fruitful bilateral contacts to
promote the sharing of experience in the field of high technologies, as well as strong cooperation in the field of energy.
Giorgio Napolitano in an Itar-Tass interview earlier pointed out that he expected his visit to Moscow to result in a continuation of dialogue with Russian leaders, as well as understanding and identity of views on international relations, on global challenges of our times, specifically in such matters as the situation in the Balkans of problems of achieving a peaceful agreement in the Middle East.
The Italian President considers it essential to promote the
development of relations between the European Union and Russia. He said Russia is an important part of European history and at the same time a big European and Asian power and that its role in the world transcends far beyond the boundaries of Europe.
