Russia should be part of Abkhazian conflict settlement-Saakashvili
TBILISI, July 18 (Itar-Tass) - Tbilisi hails Germany's efforts for a peaceful settlement of the Abkhazian conflict within the framework of Georgia's internationally recognized borders, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said.
He told a news conference that "we hail the constructive role of
Germany and of the UN Secretary General's Group of Friends of Georgia (the US, Russia, Germany, Britain and France)".
"Germany has a decisive role in this group, and we work together on details of the general plan of settling the conflict. The US and the European Union's countries also participate in this process".
Saakashvili said " much more participation of the international
community in the process of peaceful settlement of the Abkhazian conflict is necessary on the basis of the principle of Georgia's territorial integrity"
"We believe that Russia should be a part of the conflict settlement process, and not a part of the problem," he said.
"Georgia confirms the staunch policy of peaceful settlement o the
conflict. Wes no other alternative of solving it. The return of 400,000 refugees to Abkhazia - citizens of different nationalities, who had to leave the Abkhazian region as a result of the armed conflict of 1992-1993 - must become an inalienable component of peaceful conflict settlement."
"The refugees, who made over 70 percent of the then population of
Abkhazia, have the right to return to their homes, and this right
corresponds to human values," Saakashvili said.
