International holiday of cucumber celebrated in Russia's Suzdal

SUZDAL (Vladimir region), July 21 (Itar-Tass) -- Thousands of people celebrated again a merry and 'tasty' holiday of Cucumber in the Russian Golden Ring city of Suzdal on Saturday. The Vladimir and Suzdal open-air museum organized the eighth international festival, which was devoted to this worldwide known vegetable.

Many participants put on the clothes looking like this obligatory vegetable at any Russian party. Each of them hoped to win in the contestof cucumber-like dress.

Director of this open-air museum Alisa Aksenova said in her opening remarks at the traditional festival that the idea of this holiday came up to her mind during one of her missions to the Scandinavia, where thesimilar holiday of garlic is celebrated.

The cucumber show was organized for the guests of the festival, wherethey could learn everything about the main treat of the holiday.

Local cookers offered hundreds of cucumber dishes, including not only cucumber pickles, but also cucumber soups, jams and rolls. They claimed that these dishes originated more than 6,000 years ago. The row of shopping stalls was located nearby, where all guests could buy various souvenirs from straw baskets, wooden spoons and birchbark pots forcucumber pickling to felt boots.

Guests from Finland, Sweden and Denmark came to taste Suzdal cucumbers. The Scandinavian folk band enjoyed big success at the festival, as well as the folk music group Toroma from the Volga river city ofSaransk. A puppet show was staged for children with Cuke as the major hero.
