Russia foreign minister to go on Asia tour

MOSCOW, July 21 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will go on an Asian tour in China, Singapore and Tajikistan on Sunday.

On July 21-22, Lavrov will visit China, where he will meet withChinese President Hu Jintao and Premier of the State Council Wen Jiabao.

The talks will highlight the whole scope of bilateral cooperation and interaction in topical international problems. "The signing of an additional protocol-description of the Russian-Chinese state border line in its eastern part will be an important event during the visit," theRussian Foreign Ministry said.

Then Lavrov will go to Singapore to attend the annual events of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on July 23-24. "The participants of a Russia-ASEAN regular ministerial meeting will focus on discussing the condition and prospects of the development of dialogue partnership," the Foreign Ministry said. "The ministers will discuss the development of cooperation between our countries in the light of broader cooperation in such priority issues as the struggle with terrorism and transnational crime, the management in emergency situations, the energy sector and energy security, science and technologies, tourist and culturalexchanges," the ministry said.

The 15th anniversary ASEAN Regional Forum will also be held in Singapore. High on the agenda of the forum is "the discussion of topical international and regional issues, particularly the non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons in view of the settlement of the situation on the Korean peninsula and the Iranian nuclear dossier, as well as the counteraction to international terrorism and transnational crime." On July 24, during the ASEAN Regional Forum "the six negotiating nations will hold a first ministerial meeting on the nuclear problem of the Korean peninsula," a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry toldItar-Tass.

On July 25, Lavrov will attend a regular meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the member-countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Dushanbe. The forthcoming meeting will have two stages: the SCO foreign ministers will meet in a narrow format, then the ministers from the SCO observer-countries and guests will join the meetingin an enlarged format.

The SCO foreign ministers will focus on the preparations to a SCO summit due in Tajikistan on July 28. The SCO foreign ministers will also discuss topical world problems, the situation in Central Asia andAfghanistan.

The SCO foreign ministers may also discuss a possible lift of the moratorium on admission of new members in the organisation that was introduced two years ago, the source said. "If an unanimous decision is taken for possible SCO expansion, the sides will begin drafting a corresponding procedure on this issue," the source in the Russian ForeignMinistry said.

"Applications keep coming from various countries and international organisations for the cooperation with the SCO, particularly in drug trafficking problems, and the European Union and several UN agencies areinterested in the joint work with the SCO," the source said.

In Dushanbe the ministers will discuss possible cooperation between the SCO states and the nonaffiliated SCO states. "Through this new procedure the SCO states will broaden their foreign ties, all countries and organisations, which are willing to join SCO projects, will be able to involve in them thanks to this procedure," the source in the RussianForeign Ministry said.
