Khalifa suspends a decision to divert UAE-Omani border crossing

Abu Dhabi, July 22, 2008 (WAM) - President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has suspended a decision to divert the UAE-Oman border crossing from the border post of Al Moudeef to Khathem Al Shiqla. The route of the border crossing was tentatively diverted from Al Moudeef to Khathem Al Shiqla post.

However, the decision is now being called off with effect from Monday.

"The diversion of the route has been suspended for humanitarian reasons. One obvious reason is that the decision has coincided with summer holidays.

Thus, the new post has been inundated with travellers, causing delays and crowdedness. This is why the President has stepped in to suspend the decision," said HH General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior.

Sheikh Saif hailed the decision, saying it underscores the importanceattached by the leadership to the day-to-day affairs of the citizens. It also shows that welfare of the citizens is above everything else, Sheikh Saif added.

The Minister of Interior revealed that shortcomings of the newroute will addressed after through studies.

Earlier, the Ministry of Interior had diverted the crossing border toKhathem Al Shiqla post, some 13 kilometre South of Al Moudeef as the old post could not be expanded. The new post however brought new problems of its own as summer holidays begin.
