PACE head to discuss cooperation in Armenia

YEREVAN, July 23 (Itar-Tass) - President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Luis Maria de Puig will hold talks with the Armenian leadership on deepening of cooperation between Armenia and PACE, as well as on assistance to the fulfilment of the Assembly's Resolutions 1609 and 1620 related to Armenia.

He is arriving here on Tuesday on a three-day official visit, Itar-Tass was told at the information office of the Council of Europe in the Armenian capital.

De Puig intends, in particular, to assess the authenticity of the investigation of the events of March 1-2 when mass riots took place inYerevan in which 10 people were killed. In connection with his recent trip to Azerbaijan the PACE president will also discuss the recent events related to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement.

The PACE chief plans meetings with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, other leaders of the republic, members of the Armenian delegation at PACE, the country's parliamentary majority and opposition, as well as with members of the interim parliamentary commission investigating the March events. De Puig also intends to meet Armenian former President LevonTer-Petrosyan who is the radical opposition leader.

De Puig will visit the Holy Echmiadzin to meet head of the ArmenianApostolic Church Catholicos Garegin II.

Sargsyan said at a press conference here on Tuesday that Yerevan attaches major importance to cooperation with European institutions. "We are grateful to the Europeans for the attention to the region and for assistance provided to us," the Armenian president noted. The head of state considers PACE calls to fulfil its resolutions as assistance to the republic. "We voluntarily assumed the obligations and we shall fulfilthem," Sargsyan stated.
