Laos to manufacture electric wires by 2009

(KPL) Laos will be able to manufacture electric wires and copper rods for domestic market and for export by 2009.

Located in the central province of Savannakhet, this factory is a joint venture of a total investment of US$28 million between Laos, the Republic of Korea and China.

The manufacturing is expected to commence in early April 2009. The factory is being built on 14 hectares at Ban Kengphosy, Outhoumphone district.

The statement was made by Mr Khamking Luanglath, Chairman of the Lao Metal Company during the ground-breaking ceremony of the electric wires factory on 12 July.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr Bounthavy Sisouphanthong, Savannakhet Deputy-Governor and officialsconcerned.

The construction works will include the factory, a dormitory and a trainingcentre.

The maximum production capacity is about 32,000 tonnes per year. In the initial period, the factory will require 300 employees and then 1,500employees in the future.

The factory will be equipped with computerised up-to-date machineries.

The factory output will include 8mm and 600-voltage electric wires.

The production will increase about US$250 million each year.

The plant is to create income and push forward the Lao economy, generateabout US$100 million yearly.

The raw material supplies to the factory come from the Sepon Copper Mining.
