Russia India may design new tank together
NEW DELHI, July 23 (Itar-Tass) -- India and Russia are pondering thepossibility of joint production of a prospective tank, said speakers at an international seminar held in New Delhi on Tuesday at the initiative of the Indian Defense Ministry.
Indian military commanders and heads of leading national and foreigndefense companies took part in the seminar.
The new tank will be supplied to the armed force after 2020, Indian Defense Minister A. K. Antony said. The tank will be built in India, butan exchange of technologies is possible, he added.
A possibility of Russia-India cooperation in the design of a 'smart' tank is under consideration, Uralvagonzavod Director General Nikolai Malykh said. Preliminary negotiations have been held, and they willcontinue in India, he noted.
The new tank will have higher speed and firepower, as well as modernized armor, Malykh said. The cabin will be separated from the tower, which will have automatic loading and targeting mechanisms. The crew will receive current information from the command post, reconnaissance planes and satellites. The tank will have a 152-millimeter cannon and advanced fire control and targeting systems, including radars, neo-optic, thermaland infrared sights.
Russia and India have had armor cooperation before. Indian servicemen like tanks produced by Uralvagonzavod. T-72 and T-90 tanks are produced at a state plant in the southern Indian city of Avadi under bilateral contracts. India has bought over 1,600 T-90S tanks from Russia, and 1,000of them will be assembled in Avadi.
