RCA plans relief work in Ethiopia and Somalia
Abu Dhabi, July 23, 2008 (WAM) - The Red Crescent Authority (RCA) hascommenced preparations for launching a humanitarian relief programme in the drought-hit Ethiopia and Somalia. Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, Chairman of the RCA, said the RCA would transfer funds for purchasing relief supplies to be distributed to the drought-affected population in Ethiopia.
''Delivery of food items will be made in coordination with the Ethiopian Development Agency,'' he added.
According to him, funds had been provided to purchase relief for drought-famine persons in Somalia. The RCA offices in Somalia will oversee the delivery of assistance. He revealed that RCA relief operations towards affected populations by famine and drought in the Horn of Africa have seen marked increase. ''Since 2000 up to end of 2007, some 2060 tonnes of foodstuff were dispatched by air and sea to Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya,Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan,'' he added.
