Lavrov to participate in ASEAN forum, six-party talks
SINGAPORE, July 23 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday will participate in the annual meeting of theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
At the Russia-ASEAN-format meeting, ministers will sum up results of what was done over the past year and outline further steps to consolidatecooperation, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said.
The meeting is expected to approve "a road map" of joint actions for next years, he said. Particular attention is paid to development of ties with the association in such areas as counteraction against international terrorism and transnational crime, in energy, science, technologies, prevention and cooperation to deal with disasters and tourist and culturalexchanges, the diplomat said.
Russia plans to annually transfer funds to the Russia-ASEAN dialogue partnership financial foundation. Russia will give 500,000 dollars this year, and with the last year's sum taken into account, the fund amounts toone million dollars.
The funds are intended for implementation of joint projects chosen on the contest basis in areas of mutual interest. First of them, to set up an ASEAN center at the MGIMO Moscow State Institute of International Relations, electronic commerce, tourism development, cooperation in the area of renewable energy sources and Russian language teaching in ASEANcountries, will be started soon.
Cooperation with ASEAN countries is among Russia's foreign policypriorities, the diplomat noted.
During the forum, a ministerial-level six-party meeting will be held to discuss North Korean nuclear problem settlement. It will be the first foreign minister meeting after the North Korean nuclear programme wasdiscussed on a lower level in several rounds of talks in Beijing.
The Russian foreign minister will have a series of bilateral meetings with partners from Asian-Pacific countries. He is planned to have talkswith U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
