Japanese students learn Lao culture in Vientiane

VIENTIANE.30 JULY(KPL) - Students of the Toride Shoyo High School, the Mishima High School and other high schools in Japan visited Laos for the first time to learn about Lao culture.
The visit is under the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange of Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme funded by the Japanese Government.
The Japanese students met their counterparts in the Kiettisack International School and Sikhottabong School where they exchanged each other the cultures of their motherlands including Kendo (Japanese martial arts) and Yukata dressing style, Lamvong (Lao dancing). They also enjoyed sports competition.
“This activity is aimed at broadening students’ knowledge of relation between Laos and Japan, and deepen their understanding of people and cultures of the two countries,” said JICE Deputy Country Director, Ms. Harue Tomino.
“Today, I am very excited because this is the first time I have exchanged experience, custom and culture with the Japanese students,” said Miss. Fonnapha Taimany, a student from the Kiettisack International School. “At the end of May we visited Japan and exchanged Lao culture with Japanese students and we had opportunity to enjoy home stay there.”
“I am very happy that the Japanese students are visiting our school. We teach them Lao dancing style and they teach us how to make paper animals,” Miss. Southida Douangphachanh from the Kiettisack.
“I am very glad to visit Laos. It helps broaden my knowledge of Lao culture and people,” said Ms. Misaki Sumida, leader of the Japanese students’ delegation. “We are offered warm welcome and hospitality. Before visiting Laos I had a limited knowledge of Laos so when I get back to Japan I will tell my friends about Laos, its culture and custom.”
At the second East Asia Summit (EAS) in 2007, Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, announced a plan to implement a large-scale youth exchange program inviting 6,000 young people to Japan mainly from the EAS member states (ASEAN, Australia, China, India, New Zealand, the ROK).
Based on this plan, the Government of Japan launched the Japan-East Asia Network of exchange for student and youths (JENESYS) programme in 2007.
