AZERBAIJAN MAY BUILD ATOMIC POWER PLANT IN 7 YEARS

Baku, 23 July,(AzerTAj)An atomic power plant may be built in Azerbaijan in 2015, said Marlen Asgarov, Vice-President of Azerenerji, the country`s major electricity company.

Asgarov noted relevant negotiations are now being carried out with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other organizations. “Energy consumption is continuing to increase and we must find new sources to meet the needs,” he added.

An initiative to construct an atomic power plant in Azerbaijan was first suggested in 1980, but efforts were suspended after the Chernobyl disaster. Azerbaijan’s current total generating capacity is 5,500 megawatt.
