Earthquake registered off Kamchatka's southern coast

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, July 24 (Itar-Tass) - An earthquake measuring 6.1 points on the Richter scale has occurred in the PacificOcean off Kamchatka's southern coast.

The geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said there are no casualties or destruction. There is no tsunami threat.

An underground tremor was registered at 14:43 local time. The epicentre was located in the sea at a depth of ten kilometres 250kilometres away from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Earlier on Thursday, a powerful earthquake hit the northern part of Japan's Honsu Island. The tremors were felt on Southern Kuril Islands. The tremors were 3-4 points on the Richter scale. The press service of the Emergencies Ministry department for the Sakhalin region said that in the village of Malokurilskoye the underground tremors measured 3 points on the Richter scale and four points on the Shikotan Island. There were no casualties or destruction.

The geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said that the earthquake on Honsu measured 6.8 on the Richter scale. One hundred fifteen people were reportedly wounded. Five are in critical condition.

The tremors were felt in Tokyo. The earthquake disrupted train and road traffic. Mass power cuts have left more than 10,000 people without electricity. Nuclear power stations located in the earthquake area haven't bee damaged. Witnesses said that the furniture in apartments was falling, people were turning over and falling on the floor.

The epicentre was located at a depth of 108 kilometres on the coast in the northern part of the Iwata Prefecture. Seismologists are warning about possible aftershocks. However, they don't think that another powerful earthquake will strike the island again.
