MEMBERS OF MILLI MAJLIS STANDING COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS MEET ASSOCIATE DEAN OF SWC

Baku, 24 July,(AzerTAj) - Members of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijan`s Parliament) Standing Commission on Human Rights met Wednesday with the visiting Associate dean of the Los-Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) Rabbi Abraham Cooper.

Rabiyyat Aslanova, Chairperson of the Commission, spoke of accomplishments achieved in democracy and human rights in the country. She noted Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the freedom of religion, adding that people of different nationalitiescoexist and freely perform their religious ceremonies in the country.

Mrs. Aslanova notified churches and synagogues operate in Azerbaijan along with 450 religious communities and mosques.

Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, she said Armenians have destructed hundreds of mosques, churches and historical-cultural monuments in the occupied territories. “Though Armenian Gregorian Church in Baku is safeguarded, all Muslim Mosques in Armenia have been destructed” she underlined.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, in turn, said his visit to Baku aims to become closely acquainted with ongoing processes in Azerbaijan. He praised religious tolerance in Azerbaijan and also condemned destruction of the Muslim Mosques by Armenians.

The Commission`s deputy chairman Yevda Abramov, who is Jewish in origin, briefed on Azerbaijan`s democratic development, independent activities of religious communities in the country.

He also spoke of genocidal policy pursued by Armenians against Azerbaijanis and Jews.
