Flood warning before releasing Nam Ngum dam water

(KPL) The most important thing relating to the release of Nam Ngum dam water into Nam Ngum river this week-end, is authorities concerned should think twice before doing, said Dr Borsaikham Vongdara. The authorities should think about the loss of electricity production, agricultural production impact and effective use of water.

The Electricite du Laos is preparing to release Nam Ngum dam water into Nam Ngum river this week-end after the water in the dam is at-risk level, according to a meeting of the Electricite du Laos held here on 23 July.

Concerning this issue, Minister of Energy and Mining, Dr Bosaikham Vongdara would propose the Prime Minister's Office to consider. Before releasing water, the dam authorities should inform provincial, district, and authorities concerned to know in advance.

Mr Phoumy Netibandith, Director General of the Nam Ngum dam, said that now the water level in the Nam Ngum basin was high and reached almost the flooding mark of the basin at 212.30 metres. According to the metrological centre, it forecasts that there will be heavy rainfall in the next few days which prompt flash flood in the basin.

The latest survey of the water level of the Nam Ngum river at Ban Pakkayoung few days ago found that the water level seemed to decrease from 11.34 metres to 9.70 metres.

The decrease of the water level makes a good sound to release water from Nam Ngum dam to the river because it will have less impact on the agricultural areas.
